Standard 6: The teacher of PK-12 music can assess musical knowledge and skills.
During my time at K-State I have had to use assessment skills to evaluate musical performances and skills. Being the music section leader for the piccolo section of the marching band I had the opportunity to lead music sectional rehearsals. In University Band, I conducted two pieces with two different ensembles. In these setting I had to constantly assess every aspect of the ensemble’s or section’s performance and give feedback and suggestions to create a more effective performance. In University Band, after assessing what I heard during rehearsals, I also had a video recording to assess things that I might have missed during the rehearsal. I plan to use audio and video recordings for me and my students to utilize in assessing their progress. In addition to assessing students in their performance of pieces or exercises, they will also be assessed in a variety of musical concepts appropriate for their developmental level. This could be in the form of sight-reading, scales, or written tests on music theory.
